Event 1 - 30th May - Corinium CC at Down Ampney.

The first race of the series, organised by Diane Howells of Corinium CC took place on a lovely Thursday evening around Down Ampney and Poulton near Cirencester. There was a fair wind on the back straight which made going to the front taxing on that part of the circuit.
The small front group (all vets.) started at seven-thirty, followed five minutes later by the main bunch of about thirty riders. A long two minutes later the scratch group of 6 elite riders (and myself) started, at a pace that left some members of the group in a constant anaerobic haze.
The vets. group stayed away for just over two of the four six mile circuits, with John Murphy from Gloucester taking the second prime prize and not even realising it! At the end of the third lap, the scratch group was only a handful of second off the main bunch, when the elastic snapped and only Grant Bayton (V.C. Prestige) and Steve Howells (www.sdeals.com) made it across to the group.
In the flat and very fast finishing sprint Grant lead out but was pipped by Steve Howells, who seams to have now recovered from the ravages of the Ras in Ireland! Given the speed of the finish it was not suprising that the judges could only place the top six, so apologies to all those who were thereabouts but were missed.
